Bulldogs are also known as British Bulldogs and/or English Bulldogs. In earlier times some say they were also referred to as the 'Bondogge' and 'Banndogge'. It is documented that through the thirteenth to eighteenth centuries Bulldogs were used for the sport of Bullbaiting which was Bulldogs fighting bulls or fighting bears. This is where the Bulldogs gets the reputation of being vicious. It was a popular sport in Britain until the early 1800's when the inhumane Bullbaiting finally became illegal. At which time it was a concern that the Bulldog would become extinct. Many believed Bullbaiting was keeping the breed in existence. After Bullbaiting became illegal and with a careful breeding program by a few loyal Bulldog lovers, Bulldogs were eventually able to be seen for their loving and gentle personalities that they really are.

The standard Bulldog of then was quite a bit different from what we see and expect today. They were breed to fight, not for their looks or conformation. They were also too often unhealthy, which is our #1 priority of breeding Bulldogs today. And should be all breeder's priority. This now leads us to today's Bulldog Standard, according to AKC.
